  2. Approved the quarterly financial reports.
  3. Conducted an executive session to review the Director’s performance appraisal and voted to extend Employment Letter of Agreement for another year.

  7. Received a report from the Director regarding a proposed Scenic Byway for this area which will not be possible due to the close proximity of a new Scenic Byway which as been approved for a group from the Friends of Maxwell Refuge near Canton in McPherson County. (see Scenic below)_

“Today’s news is too true to be good.”

  BUSINESS “BUZZ”

New Member: We welcome City Administrator Jonathan Mitchell and the City of Ellsworth to our chamber membership. Based on a policy revision, the board of directors decided that the long-standing partnership with the city deserves the official membership recognition provided to organizations within our community.  We invite Jonathan and the city staff members to participate in our chamber functions whenever their schedules will allow. We encourage our members to let Jonathan, his staff and the City Council members know how much we appreciate their financial support for on-going operations.

Member Loss: Pennington’s This n That, 304 N. Douglas, has closed their business. We wish Rene and Edith much success as they pursue other interests while remaining within our community.

Relocation:  M & J Furniture & Appliance will be relocating to 304 N. Douglas at the end of August.

Relocation:  The Mosaic Lobby Shop Too will be moving to 117 N. Douglas in the space formerly occupied by Hoffhines Marketing & Communications and Millwood Realty.  Hoffhines’ move was reported in our last Update and will occur on August 28th.

More business changes will be announced in the near future.

Relocation Sorta: The chamber has utilized the storage room within the ECED office for several years. Both of our inventories have grown and it is time for us to move on.  I have been sorting and, with board member help, identified items for disposal, give-away and need to save.  We have a very nice boxed 7’ Spruce Christmas Tree; a 36” new vinyl aluminum threshold; and a Smith Corona XD 4600 memory typewriter to offer to chamber members. First come/call can have dibs. A contribution is welcome but not mandatory. I need to know before Thursday, 31st.

“A smile improves your face value.”

GIFT CHECKS UPDATE

a     In July there were 73 checks processed with a value of $710. There were two deposits totaling $440.  The ending balance representing uncashed checks is $3,816 as of July 31st.

a       Our current batch of gift checks have all had the expiration dates blacked out in compliance with the new legislation.  My thanks to Della Dietrich and Tina Dohe, Mosaic, for completing the mark-out on over 1,275 checks while covering the office for me while I took a one day vacation.

SCENIC BYWAY

The recently approved Kansas Scenic Byway for the Maxwell group extends from near Canton, through Lindsborg, Marquette and across the Kanopolis Lake area and ends at the intersection of 140 and Old US 40, a distance of 53 miles. Fortunately corridors extend many miles off the route where noteworthy historic sites are available. The chamber hopes to convince the Maxell consortium to list Ellsworth and Kanopolis historic sites and events in the Scenic Byway brochure that will be developed by that group after all their requirements are finalized. The benefit will be enhanced for those visitors who take the tour from the southeast to the northwest. At the 140-40 jct, we would hope that they would be encouraged to turn west instead of east to visit our sites as well. Besides the drive from the jct. to Ellsworth has a great beauty attraction of its own.

“If you’ve done better than you thought you could, then it’s a victory.”

MONTHLY CHAMBER GATHERIN’

Eagle Communications, Inc. put their best foot forward at the August 17th Gatherin’ at the Ellsworth golf course meeting room. Several eagle staff members assisted in the welcome and hosting with refreshments catered by Crossroads Restaurant. General manager Joe Engle presented a very informative power point program that spanned the history of Eagle Communications over its years from a single radio station in Hays to its present network of radio, television, cable TV, internet and other telecommunications services. Mr. Engle noted that he would be pleased to make the presentation available to any area civic clubs, church groups, etc. To do so, contact the chamber and I will assist with the arrangements.  Three lucky attendees walked away with $35, $25, and $15 in Chamber gift checks. The September gatherin’ will be hosted by the Good Samaritan Retirement Village.

GEORGIA’S CABOOSE PROJECT

Last month I shared information on Georgia Smith’s pet project, restoring the 1911 caboose at the museum. I have a good friend in Salina who owns a business I am trying to recruit as a Friend Member. I send her my updates to keep her apprised of our activities. This week I received an envelope which appeared to have a check inside. It did but in this instance it was for Georgia’s Caboose. When I called and invited her to my office for a surprise, it was worth a million to watch her eyes light up with much joy for such a generous donation. My sincere thanks to Ms. Barbara Hauptli for making our day!

The KWU Choir and Jazz Band Concert on October 29th at 3:00 pm will be a free-will offering.

PERSONAL NOTE:  I will be starting my fourth year as your director on August 29th.  It has been a really neat ride to this time.  One of the many rewarding aspects of my work is that this office has not been closed for any reason in three years.  I am fortunate and grateful to have several faithful volunteers to make that possible. May the chamber family continue to grow and prosper as we strive to serve our communities.

CHAMBER BOARD BUSINESS

At their regular September meeting the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber Board of Directors conducted the following business:

Approved the purchase of a new office chair.

Approved President Linda Denning’s candidates for the board member Ad Hoc Nominating Committee; Georgina Bates, Chair; Stacey Gustin and Alice Robson, members.  (See board seeks candidates below)

Approved: Changes to the Bylaws Article VI COMMITTEES, Section 3 (outlines procedures for establishing ad hoc committees) and adds Article VII FINANCES (financial management for the Chamber is currently provided under a set of policies). Article VII simply validates the present practice of the board’s use of Fiscal Management policies.

In other business; the board requested that the director revise the board member attendance policy to allow for excused absences in meeting established attendance standards; they also consented to amending the current “Board of Director Major Responsibilities” by including a commitment signature block to be signed by incoming board members.

“All of today’s medicines share one unpleasant side effect – They all cost too much,”

  BUSINESS “BUZZ”

Manager:   Soon to officially open, Post Rock Abstract & Title Inc, has hired Teresa Shaffer to manage the new downtown business.  Teresa recently moved to Ellsworth and is in the process of preparing the property for opening.  We will have more to report in the near future.

Relocation: M & J Furniture has completed the move to the former location of Pennington’s This n That at 304 N. Douglas.  Orvetta Handlin remains the local store manager.

Congratulations to chamber member Terry Robl and Robl Farm Supply, Inc for being presented with the  New Holland President’s Prestige Award. Robl Farm Supply, Inc was one of 288 New Holland Dealers in the United States and Canada to receive this highest dealership honor.

“People don’t fail. They give up trying.”

BOARD SEEKS CANDIDATES

With the appointment of the Ad Hoc Nominating Committee the current board of directors will be seeking six (6) individuals, for three (3) seats, who would be willing to serve a three year term on the board. The committee will meet in the near future to review the membership roster. In the meantime, it is hoped that some individuals will step up to the plate and submit their names for consideration. You may contact the office or any member of that committee named above.  I believe we have been extremely fortunate to have qualified applicants on the ballots for the past three years. Eligibility is not limited to the voting member of a full business membership. He or she may want a staff member to serve and can transfer the voting privilege to that employee for the length of their service if elected.

WELCOME BAGS

Our welcome bags for new residents need to be replenished.  I will be contacting businesses who have items in inventory so I do not get overloaded. Most have zero balances so you may wish to gather up 20 promotional items and have them ready. Don’t bring items without calling first, to see what I have, if anything for your business.

SCENIC BYWAY MEETING OFFERS NEW HOPE
Board President Linda Denning, Dennis Katzenmeier and I attended a brain storming session with the group sponsoring a new scenic byway that I mentioned in last month’s update. Program Manager Debbie Divine, Salina, was the facilitator of the discussion. The Friends of Maxwell byway corridor runs from Canton to the intersection of highways 141 and 140. We were pleased that the group recognized the value of including Ellsworth-Kanopolis in their corridor plan based on our western cultural heritage attractions. Several of our historic sites and annual events were presented for consideration.  While we had previously thought that there was no hope for Ellsworth having a scenic byway on the 140 corridor, Ms. Divine advised us that there would be a good probability that we could add the 14 miles into Ellsworth later once the Maxwell group receives final approval. This would be a significant enhancement to tourism potential for our area.

“Anyone who will gossip with you about someone else, will gossip about you with someone else “

GIFT CHECKS UPDATE

a     In August there were a whopping 150 checks processed with a value of $1,790. There were four deposits totaling $2,208.  The ending balance representing uncashed checks is $4,234 as of August 31st. There were 25 pages of cancelled checks to review.  I noted that several individuals had checks made out to them.  Several did not have a payee on the check. I encourage business owners to assure that checks have your name on the check. I realize the customer endorses them but most of the business endorsements on the back are very difficult to read after the bank processes. I try to monitor monthly where checks are cashed. I found one unauthorized location in this month’s batch.

a     Our thanks to the Ellsworth County Medical Center Employee Activity Committee for their significant purchase of gift checks for their employee recognition ceremony.

“Prosperity is that short period between the final installment and the next purchase.”

MONTHLY CHAMBER GATHERIN’

Our thanks to Georgina Bates and James Morford for hosting an enjoyable Chamber Gatherin’ at the Good Samaritan Village Chapel on the 21st. As usual, Mr. Morford had much to share regarding the continual improvements that the Good Samaritan Village has in the planning stages. Their health care efforts for our seniors are outstanding in housing as well as their assisted and total care facilities. Beginning January 1st the entire Good Samaritan Society in the U.S. will undergo a name change and establish a new logo. Inasmuch as many of the units in the country have various names that do not include the Good Samaritan label, the new designation will be “Good Samaritan Society” with the specific name placed under that banner. Appropriately, the local unit will be using Ellsworth Village. Not much of a change to remember. We congratulate and thank Good Sam for an enjoyable and informative start to our Thursday.

NEW MEMBER RECRUITMENT

The chamber board will be discussing possible plans for a fall recruitment drive for new members. In preparation for that meeting, I am asking every full board member to send me a one line statement relating why you are a member of the chamber. I plan to develop a “10 Reasons for Being a Member of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce.”  If I have a sufficient response, and I believe you all care as I do about our continued growth, I will consolidate similar responses so each will be an important reason for joining. Your business will be credited with the statement.  We also welcome any fresh thoughts you might have for encouraging your fellow businesses (over 40 non-members) to join us in doing all that we can for our communities. You or an employee may be one of our top new business recruiter volunteers!! Let me know when you send your statement describing why you belong or what the chamber means to your business.

WELCOME BAGS

Thanks to those of you who provided promotional materials for your business. We had over 50 items to welcome new residents to our communities. For those of you who missed out you may still participate by calling the office.

 DOWNTOWN/HIGHWAY BANNERS

How do you feel or think of when you travel through communities that have the colorful welcome banners displayed. Some are year-around, others signal a specific event or season. They may have a picture which defines their culture or special identity while some reflect multi colored artistic drawings.

You have to admit, they do provide that “welcome” atmosphere.  Ellsworth used to have the bucking cowboy on red background. Pretty appropriate for our western culture. Unfortunately, the weather and aging took its toll. A few were rounded up and hung by city personnel but they soon fell to the blustery Kansas winds. A lone survivor hangs in front of CSB.  It’s too bad we weren’t better far-sighted and put away funding for replacements as needed. A total renewal is now in order. This not as much about cost as it is an investment unless we do not want to enhance a positive welcome to visitors and become a player in the state’s sixth largest industry, “tourism.”   I am pleased that the board of directors was enthusiastically receptive to my suggestion that the matter is deserving of the chamber’s attention. According to the former director, Georgina Bates, the chamber was the major proponent of the first round of banners to fly down Douglas and off Highway 156. With some exciting events coming into focus for 2007 it is of utmost importance to move forward now. We will keep you posted.

SPREADING THE WORD

The chamber is not only a major source of information concerning all types of requests but also in getting information to the media in advance of activities. I have been sending the basic information on our communities’ events to the Salina Journal when I know of them or when requested to do so. I also have the potential to get press releases to over 60 state newspapers at the click of the keyboard. I have done many this past year. We have other resources as well. One was brought to my attention by Friend member, Jim Patnode, Wilson Telephone & WTCI. Jim offers non-profit organizations free announcements on their cable channels in four communities in our shopping area. For more information you may contact me and I will help you make the contact.  Jim attends most of our chamber coffees. I encourage you to come by and visit with him about this great public service.

TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES

I have received additional copies of the 2007 Central Kansas Feist directories. Businesses missed or in need of additional copies are welcome to stop by a pick-up what you need for home or office. Business has been brisk on all AT &T’s the past few weeks.

GIFT CHECKS UPDATE

a      In September 67 checks processed with a value of $915.00. There were 4 deposits totaling $1,055.  The ending balance representing uncashed checks is $4,374 as of September 30.

NEW MEMBER RECRUITMENT

The New Business Recruitment ad hoc committee will meet next Thursday or Friday at noon. Caleb and I would appreciate having a few chamber member advocates join us in planning a November campaign.. All businesses benefit either directly or indirectly from the chamber’s services We have done the best that we can with the resources that your membership provides. However, there is that needs and should be done.  If you can be here or have an employee whom you know is interested and would do a good job in planning, contact the office for recruitment job description. Caleb and I will be calling some of you soon. We hope you will respond positively.

CHAMBER BOARD BUSINESS

At their regular November meeting the board of directors conducted the following business:

a     Approved President Denning’s appointments to the slate of officers nominating committee: Wanda Morford, Caleb Schultz and Bill Finke.

a     Approved the financial report which reflected a slight increase in Balance Sheet Assets in comparison with the same period in 2005.

a     Approved the nominating committees’ board of director 2006 nominees: Amy Eck, Jon Halbgewachs, Cee Heller, John Kasper, Joe Maze and Megan Muchow. (see CANDIDATES below)

a     Reviewed the directional signage information as provided by the director. Requested that the Director seek additional quotes on a new signage concept. (see DIRECTIONAL SIGNAGE below)

a     Established the new welcome banners as a 2007 board goal. Reviewed banner quotes as provided by the director. Requested that the director procure additional information and request material samples with quotes. (see BANNERS below)

a     Cancelled the 4th Quarter County-Wide Open Forum which conflicted with the holidays.

a     Requested that the director prepare a policy draft for the use of the Chamber’s sound system.

a     Approved a provisional holiday on November 25th for use at the discretion of the director.

a     Recognized a reinstatement membership for M & J Furniture and Appliance, 304 N. Douglas.

a     Board member Glenn Shoemaker informed the board that he had just received notice that he was being transferred to the ALCO store in Lyons and would submit his resignation post haste.

“The best place for a dieter to place the bathroom scale is in front of the refrigerator.”

CANDIDATES:

The following candidates and their business association have agreed to fulfill the responsibilities of board members if elected: Amy Eck, Ellsworth County Independent Reporter; Jon Halbgewachs, Kirkham Michael & Associates; Cee Heller, Edward Jones; John Kasper, Peterson & Kasper Attorneys, Joe Maze, Casey’s General Store and Megan Muchow, Citizens State Bank &Trust Co. Election ballots will be mailed out December 1st. If you are eligible and  do not receive a ballot by the 4th, please contact the office.

DIRECTIONAL SIGNAGE
After reviewing signage for specific events the board decided to provide signs with just the word EVENT on one side only and the appropriate arrow of direction.  A make-shift plastic sleeve would be manually attached with the event name inserted.  I will obtain cost information based on this new specification. The per sign cost should be much less so that many more signs may be purchased for use throughout the year. There will much more flexibility in placement of signs wherever the venue location is.

“Speaking of ailments…don’t.”

 BANNERS

The initial cost projection for banners provided by the director varied from a low of $81.75 each to a high of $121.43. Types of materials and lettering were considered. The board wishes to pursue additional vendors and request material samples so an accurate assessment of quality and cost can be considered. The board hopes to have a cost estimate by the December meeting so an accurate budget can be determined. A fund drive will be energized as soon as possible after the amount needed is identified. The Ellsworth City Beautification Committee has offered $800 from their fund to assist with the cost. Plans call for a committee consisting of beautification members and the Chamber to select the banner and banner design.

“Preparation and enthusiasm oil the gears that help us conquer unhealthy fears.”

   BUSINESS “BUZZ”

We welcome Mike and Jody Schultz, owners of M & J Furniture & Appliance who reinstated their

2006-7 Chamber membership.  We first introduced Mike and Jody in our November 18, 2004 update. With their new location the Schultz’s have a more stable condition of operation. They now have more on the floor than before. Store Manager Orvetta Handlin reports that, after a slow start, business sales are on a very good track leading into the holidays. We thank Mike and Judy for their investment in our communities and wish them continued success.  We encourage you to stop in, welcome them aboard and see their expanded furniture and appliance offerings.

“Remember, there’s a big difference in concentrating on winning and thinking in terms of not losing.”

We also welcome, as of today (22nd), Jack and Anita Driscoll, owners of Post Rock Abstract & Title, Inc., 104 E. 1st Street. In the October update we announced the open house for the business on the 26th.  Those of us who attended were impressed with the outstanding renovation that had occurred over the past many months. Jack and his crew spent countless hours on the project and office manager Teresa Shaffer also worked diligently with final preparations for their opening. Having an abstract agency operating from the original location is very unusual and Ellsworth is fortunate to see tradition continued.  The business specializes in abstracting, title insurance and closings. We are pleased that Anita and Jack recognize the value of the Chamber with their 2006-7 investment. We wish them much success.

2006-7 Renewals:  Globalink, Inc. In-Kind.  We appreciate this investment renewal.

The campaign will continue until contacts are completed. We appreciate the enthusiasm and support these volunteers are demonstrating on our behalf.

CHAMBER GATHERIN’ KUDOS

Our thanks to Executive Director Lu Hickey and The Pines Apartments Board of Directors for a delightful Chamber Gatherin’ on the 19th. The gathering space was appropriately decorated with cowtown memorabilia. The morning refreshments were enjoyed by the attendees. Ms. Hickey demonstrated her passion for early history with stories of early day Ellsworth pioneers. She also announced that she would be leaving The Pines at the end of the month to live near her daughter in south Texas.  Four lucky ticket holders won very nice fruit tray prizes. We wish Ms. Hickey a safe journey to her new home.

“People blame fate for other accidents, but feel personally responsible when they make a hole-in-one.”

WELCOME HOME GETS CALIFORNIA BOOST

A few weeks ago Anita Hoffhines hosted a television crew from Sacramento California. They wanted to do a feature on our Free Land opportunities.  They had a pre-ad on their station announcing the upcoming story. They notified Anita of the air dates. Their information is accessible below if you care to see and listen. It did the trick as the phones began ringing immediately.  I responded to one call and sent a package of information to a man interested in relocating to Ellsworth. Anita has responded to 15 other inquiries as well.

Here's the story:

MOVING ON

ALCO store manager Glenn Shoemaker’s unexpected announcement of being relocated to Lyons was a real downer for yours truly. This past year Glenn has served on our board of directors and became more than just another businessman but a good friend as well. The opportunities for closer association with individuals are always a plus for a Chamber director, especially, when they are new to the community. Glenn expressed regret at leaving Ellsworth because, “everyone here is so friendly.”  I am sure I express the feelings of our board and, perhaps, others, who know him, in wishing Glenn the best. We thank him for his commitment to our communities in his service on our board.
