  BUSINESS “BUZZ”

WELCOME NEW 2007 MEMBERS

Full: Owner John Griffith, Griffith Gardening and Landscaping, 402 W. 1st Street, is our second recent home grown entrepreneur with his gardening, landscaping and pond & water feature installations business. (The other was Ellsworth native Kelvi Peschka, Lux Interiors).  John provides attractive looking gardens and lawns as well as renovating ones already in place. His pond service includes fish and aquatic plant products. We thank John for his support and wish him much success. You will find his business listing in our Chamber website under Homes & Gardens. His telephone number is 472-4085.

Full:  We are pleased to welcome a new Kanopolis business.  Leslie and Erin Vopat, The Bar, accepted our invitation to join our chamber family. They recognize chamber services provided to Kanopolis and the value of being a partner that helps make our positive efforts worthwhile. The Bar features beer, sandwiches and snack foods. They also have pool tables and dart boards. Business hours are Monday – Saturday, noon – 12:00 am and Sunday, noon – 8:00 pm. They are featured in our website under Beverages. Their e-mail is leserin@wtciweb.com, telephone 472-4434. We appreciate having this additional membership support from Kanopolis. My thanks to board member Joe Maze for his earlier contact with the Vopats to lay the ground work for their positive response.

Full: Our next door neighbor, Good Samaritan Society – Home Health of Central Kansas, 114 N. Douglas, Suite B, has also joined the Chamber thanks to a referral from Chamber member Jim Morford. Director Peggy Waldschmidt, Hays, was very receptive to my phone call indicating that they certainly planned to join our Chamber. The Ellsworth office staff, headed by Branch Manager Phyllis Harris, was pleased as well. I have been keeping them apprised of our activities with courtesy updates.  The local unit had previously operated out of the Good Samaritan Village. Since they are a separate entity of the Good Samaritan Society they feel it best suits their mission to occupy a separate office. In addition to Ellsworth County, the local office provides home health services to six surrounding counties. They are listed under Healthcare Services on the Chamber website and can be contacted at 472-3381 or e-mail pharris@good-sam.com.

Friend:  Randy Duncan, Western Ad Specialties, Salina, has accepted our invitation to join the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber. Randy is no stranger to our area as he has provided business promotional items to many area businesses. The Chamber has purchased the “Welcome bags for New Residents” from Randy. He makes frequent visits to Ellsworth-Kanopolis. He can be contacted via his website, www.ideapromo.com; e-mail, rduncan@wtciweb.com and 1-800-536-8859. You will find him listed under Specialties and Services on the Chamber website. Our thanks to Randy for acknowledging the value of our community’s patronage to his firm and willingness to support Chamber services to our communities.

Friend: By now, everyone should be aware that Trade Wind Energy, Lenexa, is the developer for the wind farm to be constructed near I-70. We are pleased that their CEO Robert Freeman has chosen to join our Chamber. I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon where Rob was my table neighbor and I had the opportunity to visit with him. There is no question about his company’s eagerness to be partners and supporters of the communities that are beneficiaries of the wind farm operation. We can look forward to other relationships, especially, with potential new residents who will be part of the full-time operating staff.  Rob has ordered tickets for our annual banquet and meeting. I encourage attendees to welcome him to our Chamber and get acquainted sometime during the evening. Trade Wind Energy’s website is www.tradewindenvergy.com; e-mail, rfreeman@tradewindenergy.com. They are listed under Renewal Energy Developers on the Chamber’s website. Telephone 913-322-7415

We welcome all of the above new “Diamond Jubilee Year” members and encourage them to participate in our activities and events as time allows.

“Q. Why do retirees count pennies? A. They are the only ones who have the time.”

2007 RENEWALS

Thanks for the following Chamber annual renewals:

Full Members: AFLAC; Backroom Ceramics; Casey’s General Stores; The Pines Apartments; and State Farm Insurance.

Friend: Wenz Interiors, Inc.

Non-renewals:  Friends: Lakeview Lodge and Conoco Food Mart.

Chamber Gatherin’ Kudos

We extend our thanks to Victor and Sharan Kumar, owners of the Best Western Prairie Inn Motel, for their warm welcome and hospitality at our March 16th Chamber Gatherin’.  In addition to the enjoyable morning treats, three lucky drawing winners received some very nice prizes. Victor informed the gathering that some interior improvements had been completed to the motel’s interior space as well as to some of the units. The fresh color décor was very obvious. Victor indicated that exterior improvement projects are planned for completion this year and will include new landscaping. The motel is a major asset for our community and is the sole provider of funding for the tourism bed tax which is distributed each year in March. (See Bed Tax April update).

“You get the best out of others when you give the best of yourself.”

ANNUAL MEETING & BANQUET

Final touches are currently underway for the annual meeting and banquet, Monday, March 26th.  Festivities begin with registration and reception at 5:45 pm.  Introducing the Citizen of the Year will be 6:15 followed by the dinner and speaker, Governor Kathleen Sebelius at 6:30.  The business meeting will begin at 7:30. We are appreciative of the support provided for this year’s event. We thank Citizen’s State Bank & Trust Co; Eagle Communications; Kansas Gas Service; Morford Greenhouse; Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter and Wilson Telephone Co, & WTCI.  We also thank our loyal Ambassador Club for the contributions of time and talent for various activities which include table decorations, registration table, reception, and greeters.

GIFT CHECKS

In February there were two deposits totaling $500. The bank processed 93 checks totaling $1,100. The checks outstanding total is $4,314.

“Q. Why are retirees so slow to clean out the basement, attic or garage? A. They know that as soon as they do,

one of their adult children will want to store stuff there.”

 KANSAS MAPS

We have received a supply of the 2007 Kansas maps. I had over 400 of the old, but new, 2005-6 maps. I offered them to the local and Wilson schools for classroom use.  The Ellsworth Elementary, Kanopolis Middle School, EHS and Wilson schools gobbled them all up. My thanks to Indy Reporter, Alan Rausch, for delivering the Wilson shipment.

Q. What is the best way to describe retirement? A. The never ending coffee break.”

SPRING CONCERT

The Chamber’s first fundraiser will be a spring concert featuring the Kansas Wesleyan Choir and Jazz Band Concert.  The concert will be held at the EHS PAC on Sunday, April 15th at 3:00 pm. Several of the musicians in these groups are former Ellsworth students. The director, Ken Hakoda, is also a former Ellsworth teacher.  We anticipate that AT& T will be our underwriter for the event. AT&T’s Director of External Affairs, Cindy Zapletal, is in the process of applying for funding for this special program. The grant will assist the Chamber with expenses that will be incurred. A free will offering will be available at the door.
