Description

Morton’s Moo began in 2003 when founder Sarah Morton began making homemade ice cream in a tiny building on a side street in Ellsworth, Maine.  Her delicious, homemade ice cream became so popular so fast she soon moved into a larger location next door at 9 School Street, the current location of Morton’s Moo .  The business continued to grow, eventually to be taken over in 2007 by Sarah’s daughter and son-in-law, Kirsten and Steve Henry.  Kirsten and Steve, with the help of Sarah and their two daughters, continued to expand and grow the business, including catering services, many new flavors of ice cream, gelato and sorbet, and the addition of the breezy covered porch on the front of the building where customers still today enjoy cool treats during the hot summer days, or a warm coffee or cocoa on a crisp day in the fall.  Morton’s Moo ice cream is now so popular locally that a wholesale line was created so that customers can buy cones or quarts of their favorite Morton’s Moo flavors from Bangor to Castine to Mount Desert Island.

In 2017, Morton’s Moo was sold to Molly Harding and Greg Winston, who were already great fans of Morton’s Moo and thrilled at the chance to acquire it.  With a very successful first year they continue to focus on producing the same super-premium ice cream flavors that have inspired so many die-hard fans, as well as adding some new flavors of ice cream, sorbet and gelato, drawing on Molly’s twenty years of experience as a pastry chef, with the help of Greg and their young daughter Violet acting as the official ‘taster’ :).

Morton’s Moo offers delicious, homemade products using as many local ingredient as possible. All of the milk and cream used in our ice cream is from Maine cows, we use locally roasted coffee and espresso, fresh wild blueberries from Merrill’s Blueberries right here in Ellsworth, fresh-picked local strawberries, apples and peaches (when available) and pure maple syrup from our own trees!

Morton’s Moo is dedicated to excellent customer service.  So many of our local customers say that Morton’s Moo is their ‘happy place’ and we love to hear that!  We hope you will visit our colorful, vintage-style ice cream parlor in Ellsworth (we are right on the way to Acadia National Park). Our friendly allergen-aware staff is always happy to help you!

Morton’s Moo is also committed to lowering our carbon footprint by using as many eco-friendly products in our store as possible, including compostable cups, straws, and spoons, as well as recycled paper products.  We also practice recycling and re-use whenever possible in all aspects of our operation.
